IPL Therapy

What is IPL therapy?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy, often called photo-rejuvenation, can improve the appearance of pigmented blemishes like sun freckles, age spots and redness caused by broken capillaries.* This treatment can also be utilized for the treatment of rosacea and other small vascular lesions.* There is little to no downtime and a low risk of side effects.* At Refine Medical in Bend, Oregon, we use the Lumecca device from InMode.

Lumecca IPL for Skin Rejuvenation – How It Works

*Individual results may vary; not a guarantee.

Lumecca IPL uses a non-ablative laser that is specifically designed to seek out certain pigments in the skin – redness, discolored patches and dark spots from acne scarring. Non-ablative lasers differ from ablative lasers in that they do not cause any direct damage to the skin. IPL lasers rely on a process known as photothermolysis, which provides a photofacial through the delivery of a comfortable light treatment.* With this laser, we can:

  •      Improve rosacea and other facial redness*
  •      Reduce sun spots and skin irregularities*
  •      Clear up acne and reduce large pores*
  •      Repair broken blood vessels*
  •      Stimulate new collagen production to improve skin texture*

What to expect during your appointment

During the procedure, we will use a handheld device to emit a bright flash of light from the Lumecca machine. This generally feels like an elastic snap sensation against the skin.* Lumecca IPL can be used on all areas of the body, but the most common areas of treatment are those that are regularly exposed to sunlight. This includes the face, neck, décolletage, arms, hands and legs. The light energy from the machine heats the dermis and pulls pigment to the surface of your skin.* These pigment spots will then darken and eventually be absorbed into the body or will flake off after a few days.* At your initial consultation with Dr. Pamela Mondorf, she can determine if IPL treatments are right for you.

What to expect from the results

Certain results may be seen immediately, but in most cases, optimal results appear after several days.* After your treatment, you may experience redness and a slight warming sensation.* These side effects will usually subside within hours.* Over the next couple of days, you may see a darkening of pigmented spots, but eventually they will flake off.* This will result in an evening out of your skin tone.* For treated vascular lesions, you may see a treated vein change color, or some bruising may appear, but it will fade after a couple of days.* Lumecca IPL is cleared for use on skin types I – IV and can be optimized for light and dark skin.* The side effects are rare, with most skin reactions subsiding within a few hours after treatment.* There is no downtime involved, and you will be able to return to your routine schedule immediately.*
